Buckeyes Down Spartans, 5-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team defeated Big Ten opponent Michigan State, 5-2, Sunday inside the Varsity Tennis Center. The No. 29-ranked Buckeyes improve to 9-5 overall this year and 3-2 in conference play while the Spartans fall 13-5 on the year and 4-2 in the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes hit the road after their home victory to face Minnesota in Minneapolis at noon ET Friday and play at Wisconsin at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.

The Buckeyes had wins from courts two and three in doubles to clinch the doubles point. The court two duo of Olivia Sneed and Mary Beth Hurley only dropped one game in its 6-1 victory over Habiba Shaker and Sara Kuuttila. On court three, Emma DeCoste and Danielle Wolf matched the score as they also prevailed 6-1 over their opponents, Ava Thielman and Lexi Baylis. Hurley was the next off the court after falling, 6-4, 6-1, to Samantha Memije of the Spartans on court six. The match score was tied for the second time (2-2).

It was a short-lived tie as Sanford posted a straight set win. She trailed in the first set 3-0 but won six of the last seven games for a 6-4 set victory against Aslina Chua. Sanford found her groove in the second set as she led throughout, only dropping two games to post a 6-4, 6-2 victory for Ohio State and put the Buckeyes back on top, 3-2.

With two matches remaining, Fukuda secured the team victory. Against Shaker on court two, Fukuda lost just one game for a 6-1 first set. In the second, she pulled ahead at the end, winning the last two games for the set, 7-5, breaking for the victory to clinch the team win.

On court 4, Wolf battled against Spartan Emily Metcalf after falling in set one, 6-4. The second set held a momentum shift for Wolf as she led consistently to post a 6-2 win and send the court into a third set.
