Buckeyes Down No. 10 Florida 4-1 on the Road

Feb. 26, 2017

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Last year’s matchup between Ohio State and Florida was one of the closest matches of the Buckeyes’ season. This year’s match initially appeared to be headed in the same direction, but the Buckeyes took control late in the singles matches and would go on to knock off No. 10 Florida 4-1.

Playing for the first time outdoors, the Buckeyes lost the doubles point for the third straight match. Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert fell to Josh Wardell & Chase Perez-Blanco 6-2. No. 20 Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen traded breaks early in the set, but were broken on set point to lose 6-4 to No. 9 Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez, clinching the doubles point for the Gators. No. 56 Hugo Di Feo and Martin Joyce were down to Maxx Lipman and Elliott Orkin at 6-5 when the match ended.

The Buckeyes soon took back the lead with the singles matches. Pollanen quickly evened up the contest for the Buckeyes with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Johannes Ingildsen. Torpegaard followed up, putting the Buckeyes in the lead by defeating No. 6 Alfredo Perez 6-4, 6-3 to go 12-0 on the season on court one.

The last four singles matches all came down to the third set. Kyle Seelig found his rhythm in the third set after struggling in the second to defeat No. 120 Jordan Belga 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, putting the Buckeyes at a 3-1 advantage. Di Feo sealed the deal for the Buckeyes in a great comeback win. Down a break at 2-6, 4-5 at one point, Di Feo then got really hot, breaking back and winning the tiebreaker and the third set, to defeat Perez-Blanco 2-6, 7-6, 6-1. The other two singles matches were each separated by a break in the third set, as JJ Wolf was up a break in the third set over No. 92 Orkin 7-5, 4-6, 4-3, and Joyce was down to Lipman 6-4, 4-6, 4-2.

The Buckeyes will return to Columbus for their next matchup, where they will face Notre Dame. The match is scheduled for Friday, March 3rd at 6 p.m. ET at the Varsity Tennis Center.
