Ohio State falls in tiebreaker to the Hawkeyes, faces Michigan in consolation round Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team began the spring season Friday in the opening two rounds of the second-annual Big Ten Match Play Championship in Coral Springs, Fla. The Buckeyes defeated Michigan State in convincing fashion in the first round with a 5-1 victory over the Spartans on the par 72, 7,268-yard Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla. In the afternoon, Ohio State battled Iowa to a 3-3 tie, but fell in the tiebreaker to move to the consolation play Saturday.

Starting in the first matchup against Michigan State, all six Buckeyes turned in quality results to tie for the best score of the day.  Freshman Zack Sobel lead the Buckeyes’ charge in just the second team event of his career and his first in over four months as he took down Matthew Mosely of MSU, 5 and 4. Junior Michael Cress, also starting in his second event of the season, defeated the Spartans’ Chris Mory 5 and 4.

Junior Bo Hoag was in a tight match throughout, but pulled away for the 3 and 1 victory as he defeated Jack Newman, who was a 2009 Masters participant. Freshman Matt Turner was also in a battle throughout his round, but emerged victorious against James Ross, 3 and 2.

Rounding out Ohio State’s effort against the Spartans were senior Brad Wright and junior Brad Smith, who each halved their matches against William Morris and Dan Ellis, respectively. Both trailed heading into the 18th, but won their final hole to each earn half a point.

In other opening round action Northwestern defeated Wisconsin (5-1), Purdue defeated Illinois (3.5-2.5), and Minnesota defeated Indiana (3.5-2.5).

The second round brought mixed results for the Buckeyes against Iowa. After they each halved their first match, Smith and Wright each came back with victories the second time around. Smith defeated Chris Brant 4 and 3, while Wright took down Bradley George, 2-up.

The only player to post two victories for Ohio State was Sobel as he collected his second win of the day, 3 and 2 over Dusty Koth.

Hoag fell to Brad Hopfinger, 3 and 1 and Turner was neck-and-neck with Iowa’s Vince India for all of round two, but lost 2 and 1. Cress also stumbled in the second stanza, as he was defeated 4 and 3 by Barrett Kelpin.

In other second round action Northwestern defeated Michigan (4-2), and Wisconsin defeated Michigan State (4-2). Illinois and Indiana could not finish their match due to inclement weather and will complete their match Saturday morning. Minnesota will face off against Purdue and Northwestern will take on Iowa in the semifinal matches.
