COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team downed Bellarmine, 10-7, in its ECAC Lacrosse League opener Friday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Seven Buckeyes scored at least one goal, led by Carter Brown, who had a hat trick and added two assists for a five-point game. Freshman Jake Withers won 15-of-21 faceoffs and had 10 groundballs, while classmate Nick Doyle made nine saves in his first collegiate start in the cage.

The game opened a three-game homestand for the Buckeyes as Ohio State hosts two games in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in the next seven days. The squad will take on Notre Dame at 4 p.m. Tuesday and Jacksonville at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

“The men stepped up and battled to get conference win number one,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “We had a different lineup out there tonight because of injuries and I thought the guys responded well. This is something we can build off of as we prepare for a tough Notre Dame team.” 

The Buckeyes led 2-1 after the first quarter. Evans set up David Planning for a goal at 13:04, answered by the Knights’ Matt Taulane at 9:57. With 3:06 left in the quarter, Brown put Ohio State back ahead, 2-1, starting a three-goal run for the Buckeyes and giving them a lead they would not relinquish. Each team had just four shots in the quarter, with both goalies making two saves.

Junior Rick Lewis scored at 9:17 of the second, followed by a Reegan Comeault score, assisted by Brown, at 6:18. Bellarmine stopped the Ohio State run with back-to-back man-up goals, from Cameron Gardner at 3:46 and Austin Shanks with 22 seconds left in the quarter. Withers scored his first career goal with two seconds left, assisted by Planning, for a 5-3 Buckeye advantage at halftime. Shots were 9-8 in favor of Ohio State in the quarter.

The teams traded goals early in the third quarter, with Brown scoring man-up off an assist from Evans at 51 seconds into the stanza. Ohio State again scored late, as Brown found the back of the cage with 35 seconds left in the quarter, putting Ohio State ahead, 7-4. Bellarmine had nine shots in the quarter, with Doyle making three saves, while Ohio State put eight on cage.

Each team scored three times in the fourth for the 10-7 final. The Knights scored the first two goals at 10:34 and 9:13 to draw within one (7-6) but Ohio State went on a three-goal run in 2:56 to pull away. Brown set up freshman J.T. Blubaugh at 7:36, freshman John Kelly assisted on Comeault’s second goal of the game at 6:35 and Comeault found Evans for a man-up tally at 4:40. The Knights’ Ryan Scinta had the game’s final tally with 56 seconds left. Bellarmine outshot Ohio State, 10-8, in the quarter.

For the game, Bellarmine outshot Ohio State, 31-29. Doyle played all 60 minutes and had nine stops in his first career start. Bellarmine’s Will Haas played 58:18 and had eight saves on 18 shots. Chris Cousins played 1:42 and did not face a shot on goal.

Ohio State won the groundball battle, 30-18, led by Withers with 10, his second game this season with double-digit groundballs. Senior Dominic Imbordino had four, one of 13 total Buckeyes with at least one groundball. 

Each team was 2-for-3 on man-up chances in the game.
