COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-0 overall) women’s volleyball team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-27, 25-18, 25-12) win over Western Michigan (1-1) in the second day of play at the Sports Imports Classic in St. John Arena. Katie Dull posted a match-high 22 points for Ohio State with 19 kills, one ace serve, one solo block and two assist blocks. Emily Danks added 21.5 points with 15 kills, five ace serves and three assist blocks. Bronco Gillian Asque recorded 14.5 points for Western Michigan with 13 kills, one ace serve and one assist block. Jessica Brown added 11.5 points with 11 kills and an assist block.

Leading, 6-5, in set one Ohio State went on a 9-1 scoring run to take a 15-6 lead. The run included kills from Betsy Hone, Danks, Mariah Booth and Kull, a Hone ace serve, a Danks-Booth block and three Bronco errors. The Buckeyes held the lead reaching set point off a Bronco error at 24-13. An Ali Gossen kill stopped the set point at 24-14. OSU won the set, 25-14, with a kill from Dull to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .464 for the set to .040 for Western Michigan.

With set two tied at three, an ace serve from Danks, kills from Barhorst and Dull and two Bronco errors opened an 8-3 Ohio State lead. Trailing, 14-9, Western Michigan outscored the Buckeyes 12-2 to take a 21-16 lead. The Broncos, with an Allyson Doyle kill and a Doyle-Ashley Turnage block reached set point a 24-18. Ohio State scored the next six points to tie the set at 24. Kills from Anna Szerszen and Danks, an Allie Schwarzwalder-Szerszen block and three Bronco errors helped tie the set. At 25-all, a Brown kill gave Western Michigan set point at 26-25 and an OSU error ended the set at 27-25 Broncos to tie the match 1-1. Western Michigan hit .250 for the set to .154 for OSU.

Tied at one in set three, a Dull kill, a Dull-Barhorst block and an ace serve from Danks opened a 4-1 Ohio State lead. Leading, 10-6, kills from Danks and Booth and a Booth-Dull block opened a 13-6 Buckeye lead. OSU held the lead at 22-13 before a four-point Bronco run cut the margin to five at 22-17. Danks, with a kill and ace serve, gave OSU set point at 24-17. A Brown kill stopped the set point at 24-18. OSU won the set, 25-18, with a kill from Dull to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .452 in the set to .241 for Western Michigan.

The Broncos took a 2-0 lead in set four off an OSU error and a Doyle ace serve. The Buckeyes responded with seven unanswered points to lead 7-2. The run included two kills from Dull, kills from Barhorst and Danks, a Dull solo block, two ace serves from Sarah Mignin and a Bronco error. Leading 14-9, Ohio State scored the next seven points to open a 21-9 lead. The run included three kills from Booth, kills from Dull, Danks and Szerszen and a Bronco error. A Gillian Asque kill and an OSU error made it 21-11. Kills from Dull and Danks and a Bronco error made it 24-11 with Ohio State serving match point. An Asque kill stopped the match point at 24-12. The Buckeyes won the set off a Bronco error, 25-12, winning the match 3-1. Ohio State hit .452 for the set to -.077 for Western Michigan.

Ohio State hit .364 for the match to .129 for Western Michigan. OSU had a 60-43 margin in kills and a 56-39 advantage in assists. OSU’s Hone posted a match-high 51 assists. The Buckeyes had an 11-3 edge in ace serves with OSU’s Danks recording a match-high five. OSU gave up 12 service errors to one for Western Michigan. Defensively, Western Michigan had a 48-42 advantage in digs. Bronco Lena Oliver posted a match-high 18 digs. At the net, OSU had a 9-3 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Booth, with four assist blocks, was the match leader.

Ohio State continues play in the Sports Imports Classic tonight at 7 p.m. when they host Pittsburgh (0-1) in St. John Arena.
