Buckeyes Contribute To Big Ten Sweep At First Ever ACC/Big Ten Challenge

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Quick swimming and high performance diving was the trend at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, held at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center on the campus of Purdue University. The inaugural meet of its kind between the conferences, the Big Ten registered a sweep with a close victory for the men, 179-174, and a decisive win for the women, 251-102. Ohio State swimmers finished with their best times of the season, and Buckeye diving showed continued consistency.

• 400 IM – Kristen Romano, fourth place (4:11.74)
• 500 Free – Molly Kowal, sixth place (4:45.36)
• 800 Free Relay – Kristen Romano, anchor leg for Big Ten “B”, third place (1:47.37 split, 7:10.07 relay time)
• Platform – Lara Tarvit, seventh place (250.25)
• 1000 Free – Molly Kowal, sixth place (9:46.59)
• 200 Free – Kristen Romano, eighth place (1:48.81)
• 3-Meter – Genevieve Angerame, 12th place (262.70)
• 400 Free Relay – Kristen Romano, leadoff leg for Big Ten “B”, fifth place (50.74 split, 3:20.49 relay time)

• 400 Medley Relay – Ruslan Gaziev, freestyle leg for Big Ten “A”, second place (42.84 split, 3:06.47 relay time); Noah Lense, butterfly leg for Big Ten “B”, third place (46.47 split, 3:06.95 relay time); Michael Salazar, butterfly leg for Big Ten “C”, sixth place (46.66 split, 3:11.53 relay time)

• 200 Medley Relay – Michael Salazar, butterfly leg for Big Ten “B”, third place (20.61 split, 1:25.96 relay time); Noah Lense, butterfly leg for Big Ten “C”, sixth place (21.27 split, 1:28.51 relay time)
• 1000 Free – Nick Hogsed, fifth place (9:01.68)
• 200 Free – Paul DeLakis, fourth place (1:36.87)
• 200 Fly – Noah Lense, seventh place (1:46.87); Michael Salazar, eighth place (1:46.95)
• Platform – Aaron Daniels-Freeman, fifth place (345.60); Jacob Siler, 11th place (313.40)
• 400 Free Relay – Ruslan Gaziev, second leg for Big Ten “A”, second place (42.94 split, 2:49.77 relay time); Paul DeLakis, third leg for Big Ten “B”, fifth place (44.30 split, 2:56.50 relay time)

• Michael Salazar helped the Big Ten “B” relay squad to a third-place finish for two points towards the Big Ten scoring. Salazar’s butterfly split was 20.61, and he joined Joseph Young (Purdue), Ian Finnerty (Indiana) and Bowen Becker (Minnesota) for an overall time of 1:25.96.
• Noah Lense swam a 21.27 butterfly split on the Big Ten “C” relay. The group finished sixth with a time of 1:28.51.
• Nick Hogsed came up big in the 1000 Free, narrowly missing a sub-nine minute time. He did, however, take 20 seconds off his team-best time by clocking in at 9:01.68.
• Paul DeLakis claimed fourth in the 200 Free, posting a season-best time of 1:36.87 and adding two points for the Big Ten team.
• The Buckeye Fly representatives, Lense and Salazar, achieved season-bests in the 200 Fly. Lense touched the wall at 1:46.87 followed by Salazar at 1:46.95, just shy of NCAA B cuts.
• In the first platform competition of the season, Aaron Daniels-Freeman led the way for Ohio State with a fifth-place finish, scoring 345.60, adding another point for the Big Ten score in a team race where every point was crucial.
• Both Daniels-Freeman and Jacob Siler notched NCAA zone qualifying scores.
• Ruslan Gaziev was the second leg of the Big Ten “A” 400 Free Relay squad, swimming with Indiana’s Zach Apple, Minnesota’s Bowen Becker and Indiana’s Mohamed Hassan. Gaziev posted a 42.94 split in a tight race with the ACC “A” team, and the four finished second with a time of 2:49.77 – an NCAA A cut time. The first two relays were over three seconds ahead of the remaining groups.
• Paul DeLakis was the third leg on the Big Ten “B” team, clocking a 44.30 split and finishing fifth as a team with a time of 2:56.50.

• Molly Kowal took 12 seconds off her 1000 Free time, placing sixth at 9:46.59.
• In the 200 Free, Kristen Romano swam a team-best time of 1:48.81 and finished eighth.
• Genevieve Angerame scored 262.70 on the 3-Meter board for 12th place.
• Romano closed out the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on the Big Ten “B” relay squad, swimming the leadoff leg with a split of 50.74. Teammates Mackenzie Padington (Minnesota), Shelby Koontz (Indiana) and Chantal Nack (Minnesota) finished out with a time of 3:20.49.

Ohio State gears up to host the annual Fall Invitational on Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 15-17 at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Morning sessions begin at 10 a.m. and evening sessions will start at 5 p.m.
