Buckeyes Competing in Thunderbird Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team sent freshmen Irina Cantos Siemers and Cindy Chen to the Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The tournament ran Friday through Sunday at the Whitman Tennis Center.

The Buckeye duo was joined by players from host Arizona State, California, Washington, Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech, San Diego, Notre Dame, Michigan and Mississippi State.

Cantos Siemers led the way with two singles wins. She posted a victory against San Diego’s Daniela Morales, 6-2, 6-0 then came back to top Kansas State’s Anna Turco, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Chen fell to Maria Tyrina of San Diego, 7-6, 6-4 and to Ines Mesquita of Kansas State in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-4). Sunday, the Buckeyes faced players from Cal. Cantos Siemers fell to Julia Rosenqvist (6-4, 6-3) and Chen was defeated by Katerina Stloukalova (6-2, 6-1).

Cantos Siemers and Chen competed against Jasie Dunk and Julia Rosenqvist of California in the first session of doubles but fell 6-4. They then lost to Washington’s Katarina Kopcalic and Sedona Gallagher, 6-2, Saturday. Sunday, the Buckeye duo lost to Kansas State’s Karine-Marion Job and Ines Mesquita, 6-2.

The tournament wrapped up the fall schedule for the Buckeyes.
