Buckeyes Competing in Miami Spring Invite

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 13-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team competed in the Miami Spring Invite in Coral Gables, Florida, this weekend. The hidden dual format tournament featured the Buckeyes, host and No. 19 Hurricanes, No. 2-ranked Vanderbilt and No. 21 Kentucky.

The Buckeyes notched three ranked wins in the tournament, with the doubles tandem of Shiori Fukuda and Anna Sanford downing the No. 19-ranked squad and Olivia Sneed and Fukuda both recording Top 30 wins. . Junior Andrea Ballinger led the Buckeyes with two singles wins in Miami. 

On the final day of the Miami Spring Invite, a three-set win by senior Olivia Sneed over Vanderbilt’s No. 19-ranked Christina Rosca (6-3, 2-6, 6-3) highlighted the day. Junior Andrea Ballinger also picked up a victory, downing Commodore Payton Robinette in straight sets.

Two Buckeyes fell in three set matches. Senior Anna Sanford rallied to force a third set against No. 4-ranked Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt, but was clipped in the final set, falling 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Danielle Wolf also dropped a three-set match to a ranked opponent, as she lost to No. 96 Summer Dvorak, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, the Buckeye duo of freshman Emma DeCoste and redshirt sophomore Wolf downed Miami’s tandem of Sara Culbertson and Pamela Richter, 6-1.

Three Buckeyes posted singles victories on Day Two, along with an upset win in doubles.

Andrea Ballinger prevailed in three sets vs. Kentucky’s Brianna Tulloch, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

No. 80-ranked Shiori Fukuda won against No. 29 Akvile Parazinskaite of Kentucky and Anna Sanford posted a victory over the Wildcats’ Emily Fanning, with both opponents retiring.

In doubles, the duo of Fukuda and Sanford downed the No. 19-ranked squad of Emma Kurtz and Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (1).

The tandem of Mary Beth Hurley and Olivia Sneed fell in a tiebreaker to Vanderbilt’s Fernanda Contreras and Summer Dvorak, 7-6 (2) and the duo of Emma DeCoste and Danielle Wolf suffered a 6-4 defeat to the Commodores’ Amanda Meyer and Emily Smith.

On the first day, Buckeye freshmen Emma DeCoste and Mary Beth Hurley were 7-5 winners in doubles over Lesedi Jacobs and Diana Tkachenko of Kentucky.

No. 80-ranked Shiori Fukuda lost in three sets to Miami’s Ana Madcur, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, and DeCoste rallied to force a third set vs. the Hurricanes’ Daniella Roldan, but fell 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

Redshirt sophomore Hannah Cseplo faced Miami’s Pamela Richter to mark her first match for the Scarlet and Gray, falling 6-3, 6-1.

Up Next
The first dual matches for the Buckeyes will be in Columbus Friday and Saturday when Ohio State hosts ITA Kickoff Weekend matches. Friday, the Buckeyes will face Kansas in the first round at 10 a.m., with No. 18 Arkansas taking on Wake Forest at 1 p.m. The winners and losers will meet on day two, with the championship match at 4 p.m. and the consolation match at 7 p.m. The site winner will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis. Admission is free to all matches, which will be held in the Varsity Tennis Center.
