COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team commemorated the 2012 season with a luncheon and awards presentation in the Huntington Club at Ohio Stadium.

Senior defender Chris Gomez headlined the award recipients by receiving the team’s Most Valuable Player award after a capstone campaign in which Gomez started all 19 games and played 1,731 minutes for the Buckeyes. The award is voted upon by the team and coaches.

The Linda Daniel Most Inspirational Award was split between Austin McAnena and Sebastian Rivas, the 2011 recipients of the Coach’s Award and Most Improved Player Award, respectively. The two senior midfielders combined to score six goals, record three assists and tally 15 points for the Buckeyes in 2012. For their respective careers McAnena started 78 of 79 games that he played in, posted 16 goals (eight of which were game winners), 11 assists and 43 points; while Rivas started 15 of 52 games in which he made an appearance, scored six goals, managed one assist and 13 points. Additionally McAnena was named to the Second Team All-Big Ten squad for the 2012 season.

In goal for the Buckeyes, Alex Ivanov was awarded as the Most Improved Player. After redshirting as a freshman, Ivanov started seven matches for the Buckeyes and allowed just 13 goals while making 38 saves.

The Academic Award was presented to senior Joshua Breto, who started five of the 16 games in which he made an appearance in 2012. Breto had one goal and two points for the Buckeyes in his senior season, increasing his career totals to seven and 22. Breto also was honored as the team’s Sportsmanship Award recipient in the Big Ten.

Zach Mason earned the Newcomer of the Year award after being named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2012. Mason finished his rookie season third on the team in minutes with 1,681 after starting all 19 games. On the season Mason tallied two assists and two points.

The final honor of night was given to Sage Gardner, as the recipient of the Coaches Award. Gardner started all 19 games this season, scoring twice on just 15 shots. The goals were the first of the junior defender’s career and each came in penalty kicks.
