Buckeyes Close Regular Season with 16-5 Record at Northwestern Duals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing program completed day two of the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill., Sunday. The No. 3-ranked men recorded four wins and one loss, advancing them to 8-2 on the weekend. The No. 4 women finished 5-1,  moving their tournament record to 8-3. The Buckeyes close the weekend with an overall team record of 16-5.

The tournament closed out regular-season dual competition for the Buckeyes.

Round 1

Both Buckeye squads opened day two competition against Stanford. Despite Henry Lange’s three-win contribution, the men’s squad fell to the Cardinal in a close 14-13 round.

The women, on the other hand, had a dominant showing. Julieta Toledo, Sarah Merza, Montserrat Viveros and Natalia Falkowski all contributed three wins to push the Buckeyes over the Cardinal, 21-6.

Round 2

In an exciting round, the women took out No. 9 Northwestern, 14-13. Freshman Montserrat Viveros won the deciding bout in epee to clinch the team win on Northwestern’s home strips. Sarah Merza and Viveros both contributed three wins.

Round 3 

Both squads beat out Incarnate Word 24-3. Men’s and women’s sabre each went 9-0.

Round 4

Despite women’s sabre and foil winning 5-4, epee fell 6-3 to Air Force, leaving the Buckeyes at a 14-13 deficit, marking their only loss of the day.

Round 5

Strong performances in men’s epee and sabre allowed the Buckeyes a 17-10 win over Air Force. Domenik Koch, Roscoe Swartz and Henry Lange all contributed three wins.

The No. 4 women also won in convincing fashion in round five. Wins in sabre and foil le to a 17-10 win over No. 5 Temple. Gabriela Cecchini, Alexa Laskaris and Montserrat Viveros all contributed three wins; it was Viveros’s third 3-0 mark of the day.

Round 6

Both men’s and women’s squads marked convincing wins over UC San Diego; all six squads won their rounds. Roscoe Swartz and Diego Cervantes led the men’s squad to a 17-10 win.

Five Buckeyes marked three-win records for the women’s squad: Sarah Merza, Evie Bustamante, Gabriela Cecchini, Camila Rivano and Natalia Falkowski. Their performances allowed a 19-8 win over UCSD to close out their weekend.

Round 7

The men’s squad finished their tournament in dominant fashion with a 27-0 shutout over Detroit Mercy.

What’s Next?

The Buckeyes will begin postseason competition hosting the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in French Field House in Columbus Feb. 22-23. Ohio State has claimed the last six conference titles.
