COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team closed out action at the 2011 Big Ten Match Play Championship Saturday on the par 72, 7,048-yard Champion Course at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The Buckeyes tied Indiana 2-2 in the semifinal round, but Indiana won the tiebreaker to send the Scarlet and Gray to the third-place consolation-round matchup against Illinois. Ohio State went on to beat the Illini 3.5-2.5 to claim third place in the third installment of the Match Play Championship.
Northwestern defeated Indiana 4-2 in the championship to win the match play for the second year in a row. Michigan and Iowa squared off in the fifth-place match with the Wolverines taking the match 3.5-2.5.
Starting the day with a semifinal-round matchup against Indiana, the Buckeyes received solid performances across the board. Senior Bo Hoag improved his 2011 Match Play record to 2-0 with a 2 up win over David Erdy. The pairing went back-and-forth for much of the round before Hoag took control on holes No. 16-18 to win the match. Michael Cress held off a late surge from Brant Peaper to take a 1 up victory for the Scarlet and Gray.
Senior Brad Smith and sophomore Zack Sobel squared their matches against Chase Wright and Kyle Perry, respectively. Smith was 1-up heading into the final hole, but a bogey opened the door for Wright to bring the match all square. Sobel led through most of his matchup, but Perry chipped away at the lead before finally tying up the score on the 18th hole.
Rounding out the six-man lineup for Ohio State were junior Dan Charen and sophomore Matt Turner. Charen fell 4 and 3 to David Mills and Turner was defeated 5 and 3 by Corey Ziedonis.
The Buckeyes ended the day on a high note with a 3.5-2.5 win over top-seeded Illinois. Doing his best to replicate his previous two rounds, Hoag defeated Scott Langley 2 and 1 to move to 3-0 for the event. Smith and Charen each put up 3 and 2 victories over Luke Guthrie and Chris DeForest, respectively, while Cress halved his match with Thomas Pieters. Turner fell 4 and 3 to Mason Jacobs and Sobel dropped a 3 and 2 decision to Clayton Parkhill.
Ohio State will swing into action in a week’s time when it travels to Rio Grande, P.R., to take part in the Puerto Rico Classic Feb. 20-22.
