COLUMBUS, Ohio – The high octane offense and dominant pitching continued for the Buckeyes Sunday as Ohio State defeated Penn State 11-0 at Bill Davis Stadium to claim a 3-1 series win.
It was the second straight Big Ten series win for the Buckeyes this season after taking three of four games from Northwestern last weekend in the opener. But this was a different series for Ohio State, which struggled offensively in a 14-2 loss in the series opener on Friday. The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 6-2 lead through four innings, but after that point, Ohio State out-scored Penn State 26-0 to post wins the in the final three games of the weekend.
That included a 10-0 complete game win by Scott Lewis in the second game on Saturday and Sunday’s 11-0 victory by Nate Smith (Jr., Bryan, Ohio/Bryan), who pitched eight scoreless innings and Mike Madsen (Chesterland, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), who finished the final inning of Sunday’s win. From the bottom of the fifth in Saturday’s first game, Buckeye pitchers kept Penn State batters scoreless in the final 19 innings of the series. Ohio State cameback for the 7-6 win in that first game.
Smith struck out eight and walked just one though he allowed seven hits in his eight innings of work on Sunday. He improved to 3-0 with the win. Madsen struck out two in the ninth.
The offense found its rhythm against Penn State (11-14, 2-6 Big Ten) as well with all nine batters on Sunday getting at least one hit. Both Christian Snavely (So., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) and Doug Deeds (So., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) hit two-run home runs in the second inning Sunday adding to the one run batted in by Nick Swisher (Jr., Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) in the first to give Ohio State a 5-0 lead. It was Snavely’s fifth home run of the season and his second of the series. His five homers lead the team. The home run by Deeds that also scored Brett Garrard (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) was his fourth of the year. The Buckeyes (18-6-1, 6-2 Big Ten) benefited from a walk and had three base hits to add a run in the fourth inning. Deeds singled through the right side with one out and then Swisher singled to right. He was followed by Doug Dendinger (Sr., Greenwich, Ohio/South Central) who walked to load the bases. Joe Wilkins (Sr, Grove City, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) singled to left to score Deeds.
Five more Buckeyes scored in the eighth inning to give Ohio State its 11-0 victory. Deeds got his third hit of the game to start the inning and then moved to second on a walk to Swisher and to third on a walk to Dendinger. Deeds scored on a passed ball that also put runners at second and third for a two-run single by Brooks Graff (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy), who was pinch hitting for Wilkins. A double by Drew Anderson (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) advanced Graff to third and then a pinch hit sacrifice fly by Lance Rolston (Jr., Athens, Ohio/Alexander) scored him. Snavely’s third RBI of the game allowed Anderson to score the 11th run for Ohio State.
Snavely finished the four-game series with a .438 (7-for-16) batting average with eight RBI, two home runs and a triple. Mike Rabin (Fr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), who started in leftfield for the Buckeyes in the final three games of the series finished the weekend with a .538 (7-for-13) batting average.
Ohio State plays host to Oakland at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday at Bill Davis Stadium before heading to Iowa for a four-game Big Ten series next weekend.
