Buckeyes Claim CCFC Team and Squad Titles

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was a near sweep for the Ohio State fencing program at the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships Sunday in Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes won both the men’s and women’s team titles and captured the men’s and women’s sabre and foil squad trophies, along with the men’s epee championship.

The women were a perfect 5-0 on the day in team competition, defeating Wayne State and Lawrence 27-0, Denison 25-2, Cleveland State 26-1 and Northwestern 16-11. The sabre and foil squads also went 5-0, while epee was 4-1 to finish second, with its only loss to the host Wildcats, 5-4. The women’s foil squad won 5-4 against Northwestern to take that title.

The men swept their three matches, defeating Wayne State 23-4, Lawrence 21-6 and Cleveland State, 22-5. The sabre, foil and epee squads were all 3-0.

Claire Teresa Galavotti (foil) and Ele Perrier (sabre) led the Buckeye women with 9-0 marks at the championships, while Eva Mazur, Montserrat Viveros and Lucy Whittemore each had seven wins to pace epee. Katherine Larimer and Julieta Toledo were both 6-0 in sabre and Evie Bustamante had five wins. In foil, Miranda Freedman was second with seven wins and Alina Lee and Camilla Rivano each had six. Karina Dyner notched six victories in epee.

For the men, Jack Price had six wins to lead sabre, followed by Shanvanth Arnipalli with four. In foil, Edriss Ndiaye and Nathan Wriedt both had six victories on the day. For epee, Gabriele Feinberg had a squad-best six wins.

On the year, Ohio State’s women are now 29-8 as a team, with the men 27-6.

Next up, Ohio State will host the NCAA Regionals March 12 in French Field House. The NCAA Championships are slated for March 24-27 in South Bend, Ind.
