Members of the Ohio State women’s tennis team captured titles recently.
Layne Sleeth, an incoming freshman, won the ITF $15K Cancun Tennis Cup, dropping just one set in five matches en route to the title.
In the 32-player draw, Sleeth defeated Katya Ramirez of Mexico in the first round (6-0, 6-3) and Salma Ewing (7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-4) and Gianna Pielet (6-0, 6-2) of the United States in the next two rounds. In the semifinals, Sleeth was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Elle Christensen of the US and she defeated Brazil’s Thaisa Grana Pedretti, 6-2, 6-1, in the final.
Sleeth, from Markham, Ontario, remained in Mexico for a tournament the following week, where she reached the doubles quarterfinals.
Luna Dormet, a rising junior for the Buckeyes, captured the Open Tennis Club de Tours in France. In the semifinals, Dormet won 6-4, 6-0 against Maelle Babeaud of France. In the final, the Buckeye won 6-2, 7-5 over Argentina’s Candela Bugnon.
Closer to home, redshirt freshman Kathleen Jones and junior Mary Beth Hurley won the Bernard Master Elysium Doubles Classic title in Plain City, Ohio.
The Buckeye duo topped No. 1 seed Michelle Jarrett and Zoey Weil in the final after a 6-1, 6-1 win in the semifinals.
