COLUMBUS, Ohio – Postseason play is on the horizon for the Ohio State men’s golf team, as the club will compete in French Lick, Ind., Friday through Sunday (May 2-4) at the 2014 Big Ten Championships. For the third consecutive season, the 72-hole conference showcase will be contested on neutral turf, with the par 72, 7,152-yard Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort serving as the setting this season.

Ohio State has collected 23 conference titles as a member of the Big Ten, which stands as the most earned by any school in the league. Eighteen players donning the Scarlet and Gray have received medalist honors. The program’s last conference championship came in 2004.

Teams will compete in 72 holes of golf over three days, compared to the typical regular season 54-hole format. This means the Big Ten Championships will mark the longest tournament of the year for the Buckeyes. Back-to-back rounds will be played Friday, along with 18 holes reserved for Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Five student-athletes will compete for each school with the lowest four scores counting toward the team total. A Big Ten title as well as an automatic bid into the 2014 NCAA Regional Tournament will be awarded to the team that records the lowest total score.

In the 2013-edition of the Big Ten Championships, Ohio State tied for fourth with a four-round total of 38-over 1190. Illinois captured the team title, finishing with an 11-over 1163. Then sophomore Boo Timko earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Championship team after placing fourth overall with a 3-over 291.

The Buckeyes are in search of their fifth straight top-5 finish this weekend. Ohio State’s current hot streak started in mid-March with a t-3rd showing at the Seahawk Intercollegiate and has extended with three more top-5 performances at the Irish Creek Collegiate, Robert Kepler Intercollegiate and Boilermaker Invitational.

Ohio State recently recorded its fourth consecutive top-5 finish, placing fifth at the 2014 Boilermaker Invitational. The Buckeyes climbed in the standings as the weekend progressed. Following the first round, Ohio State sat in 12th place. However, entering the championship round of play the Scarlet and Gray ranked seventh before posting a 4-under 284 through the final-18 to take fifth. Junior Boo Timko shared fourth in the individual standings, carding rounds of 76-66-71 for a 3-under 213.

World-renowned golf course designer Pete Dye, often called the “Greatest Modern Day Architect,” sketched his early vision for a special sort of golf course in French Lick on a napkin at a local restaurant. His vision has now been etched into the hilltops near West Baden Springs Hotel, and in June 2009 the 18-hole Pete Dye Course at French Lick opened as one of the premier championship Indiana golf courses. Having built golf courses all over the world including great coastal sites, this course arguably could be considered Dye’s best inland site offering golfers 40-mile panoramic views of the countryside. Dye aimed for this to be a “walkable” course, and golfers are sure to feel Dye’s signature sting as they tee off from vista- to-vista on this 18-hole masterpiece. The Pete Dye Golf Course at French Lick will play host to the 2015 Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid.

The projected weather forecast for the championships could not get much better. According to, temperatures spanning mid-sixties to mid-seventies are on tap, with sunny skies and limited-to-no chance of precipitation each day. Wind gusts up to 14 mph could play a factor on Friday and Saturday; however, they should die down for the championship round Sunday.

Ohio State is earning its frequent traveler miles this season, as it will travel a total of 6,098 miles to 10 different tournaments. This averages out to 609.8 miles per trip. The longest trip for the Buckeyes was to Sarasota, Fla. in mid-February, which tallied approximately 1,085 miles. The squad has invaded the state of North Carolina on three occasions; states traveled also include Illinois, Texas, Florida and Indiana.

The NCAA Selection Announcement will be aired on the Golf Channel Monday, May 5 at 10 a.m. Regionals of the NCAA Tournament are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday (May 15-17) at numerous sites.
