COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team opened the Maryland Invitational with a three-set sweep of Binghamton, 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-11), Friday in the Comcast Pavilion.
Ohio State improved to 3-1 on the season, while Binghamton dropped to 1-4.
Senior Mari Hole led all student-athletes with 13 kills and added six digs and two service aces. Senior Emily Danks finished with seven kills and a service ace, while Mariah Booth and Kaitlyn Leary had five kills apiece. Senior Amanda Peterson dished out a match-best 26 assists in the win.
Defensively, the Buckeye blockers totaled 9.0 blocks in the match. Leary tallied two solo blocks and one block assist to lead the squad. Booth and freshman Andrea Kacsits finished with one solo block and two assist blocks each. Libero Davionna DiSalvatore notched her fourth-straight double-digit dig total this season, finishing with 10 overall.
The Bearcats were led by Alex Roland with eight kills and three blocks. Libero Xiomara Ortiz had 16 digs, while setter Amanda Dettmann had 19 assists.
Ohio State opened the match with a kill by Leary that led to a Buckeye 6-1 run. Up 10-6, a kill by Danks triggered a six-point rally for a 16-7 lead. A kill from Hole set the score 17-9 and Ohio State closed out the first set on a 9-1 run for a 25-11 win.
Tied early at 3-3, a Booth kill sent the Scarlet and Gray on a run highlighted by three kills from Hole. The Bearcats battled back and came within two at 13-11 and then tied the set at 17-17. Ohio State pulled away at 20-17 and finished the set with a 25-20 win.
The Buckeyes started the third set like the first, taking a quick six-point lead. Up 10-4, a handful of Binghamton errors helped Ohio State push its lead to 10 at 16-6. The Buckeyes cruised the rest of the way and sealed the win with a kill by sophomore Erin Sekinger, 25-11.
Ohio State returns to the court early Saturday, taking on Seton Hall at 11 a.m. in the Comcast Pavilion. The squad closes out the tournament facing host Maryland at 7:30 p.m. ET.
