COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman lefthanded pitcher Scott Lewis (Fr., Washington Court House, Ohio/Washington Court House) pitched a two-hit shutout as the Buckeyes downed Penn State 10-0 to sweep Penn State in the Saturday doubleheader at Bill Davis Stadium.
Lewis struck out six batters and walked four in his shutout as a Buckeye. He had previously shut out Detroit in a five-inning victory on March 16 by the same 10-0 score.
Offensively, the Buckeyes had 14 hits for the game, including three doubles, two triples and a home run. Christian Snavely’s (So., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) home run in the fifth inning made him 4-for-4 for the game with four runs batted in. He also scored two of the Buckeye runs. Mike Rabin (Fr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) was 3-for-4 from the plate and scored twice without an RBI.
Ohio State (17-6-1, 5-2 Big Ten) jumped out of the gate taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Snavely led off the inning with a triple, his third of the season. After a pop up and a walk, Nick Swisher (Jr., Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) doubled to score both Snavely and Doug Deeds (So., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley).
The Buckeyes scored five times in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead. Deeds led off the inning with a base hit to right and then advanced to second on a walk to Swisher. Doug Dendinger’s (Sr., Greenwich, Ohio/South Central) sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third.
Joe Wilkins (Sr., Grove City, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) kept up his solid hitting on the day hitting another two-RBI double to left-centerfield. Both of Wilkins’ hits in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader were doubles, including his second which scored the winning run in the 7-6 victory in game one.
Drew Anderson (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) tripled to right-centerfield to plate Wilkins and then a sac fly by Paul Farinacci (Fr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) scored Anderson. Rabin hit through the right side and then stole second and then advanced to third on a throwing error by PSU catcher Matt Harter who was attempting to throw out Rabin. Rabin scored on a base hit down the leftfield line by Snavely.
Snavely homered to right field in the fifth to give Ohio State a 9-0 lead. Snavely also scored Rabin, who had a one-out single. Snavely then singled up the middle in the sixth inning to score Brooks Graff (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) who led off the inning with a pinch-hit double.
Penn State (11-13, 2-5) starter Josh Palm got the loss for Penn State to fall to 1-2 on the season. He allowed five runs on five hits to the first 15 batters of the game. He pitched just 2 1/3 innings.
Ohio State will go for its second series win of the Big Ten season when the two teams close out the four-game series Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch.
