Buckeyes Blanked by No. 17 Fighting Illini

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team came up short to No. 17 Illinois in straight sets (25-21, 26-24, 25-17) at Huff Hall Saturday night. The loss puts the Buckeyes at 11-11 overall and 4-6 in the Big Ten while the Fighting Illini improve to 10-9 and 5-5 in conference play.

Gabby Gonzales recorded the second double-double of her career (12 kills, 10 digs). Elle Sandbothe joined her in double figures with 10 kills. Jenaisya Moore tallied nine kills, four digs and two blocks while Lauren Witte had seven kills and three rejections. Becca Mauer added 23 assists and three digs.

Kylie Murr had a match-high 19 digs and Mac Podraza chipped in 14 helpers, two digs and two blocks. Bia Franklin and Hanna Gruensfelder earned 11 and seven digs, respectively, on the night.

SET 1: Two kills by Gonzales and an ace from Gruensfelder tied the opening frame at 6-6. The teams went back and forth until a 5-1 run put the Fighting Illini ahead 20-15. The Buckeyes responded with a 5-1 sprint of their own to force an Illinois timeout at the 21-20 mark. Back on the court, the Fighting Illini rolled to take the set, 25-21.

SET 2: A Sandbothe-Moore rejection brought Ohio State within one, 8-7. The Buckeyes used their second timeout down 15-10. Ohio State came out of the break swinging and scored eight straight points to take an 18-16 lead. Illinois made up the difference and went on to claim a 26-24 win.

SET 3: After exchanging the first 14 points, the Fighting Illini went on a 7-1 run, forcing the Buckeyes to take a timeout as they trailed 14-8. The deficit proved too great as Illinois cruised to a 25-17 victory.


Ohio State stays on the road to face No. 7 Minnesota at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
