Athens, Ohio – Morgan Kile, Maartje Bongers and Maddy Humphrey scored goals on Sunday afternoon at Pruitt Field to help the Ohio State field hockey team get back in the win column with a 3-0 victory over Ohio. The Buckeyes now sit at 4-3 overall while the Bobcats fall to 1-7.
Ohio State got on the scoreboard quickly with a goal in the third minute of the game from senior Morgan Kile. The Mountain Top, Pa., native scored the goal unassisted in what was Ohio State’s earliest goal of the season.
The Buckeyes dominated the rest of the first half with six more shots while only allowing two opportunities for the Bobcats. In what turned out to be her only test of the game, Liz Tamburro turned away a shot by Ohio’s Kendall Ballard with ease. With the shutout, Tamburro’s career total now sits at eight, tying her for eighth all-time in program history alongside Nikki Thompson (1994-97).
In the 42nd minute of the game, Maartje Bongers scored her first career goal. Maddy Humphrey started the penalty corner before Esther Clotet Alsina stopped the ball and dished it to Bongers for the goal. Less than halfway through the season and Bongers has already tripled her point production from her freshman campaign in 2016 with six points.
Humphrey added the icing on the cake with a goal in the 55th minute on a nice dish from Kile. With the goal, Humphrey became only the ninth player in program history to score 40 or more goals in a career. Both Kile and Humphrey had three point days with one goal and one assist apiece.
Ohio State welcomes Big Ten foes Michigan (Sept. 22) and Michigan State (Sept. 24) to Buckeye Varsity Field for conference games this weekend.
