COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team erased a 2-0 deficit but came up short to Maryland in five sets (25-22, 25-22, 15-25, 22-25, 17-15), on Saturday night. The Buckeyes drop to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play while the Terrapins improve to 11-5 (2-2 B1G).
Vanja Bukilić led the Scarlet & Gray with a career-high 19 kills and 19.5 points. Madison Smeathers contributed 13 kills and Jordan Fry added nine. Lauren Witte had eight kills, seven blocks and two aces while Adria Powell notched six kills.
Becca Mauer tallied 48 assists, 13 digs and five blocks for her third straight double-double. Hannah Gruensfelder had a team-best 20 digs and Bia Franklin dug 10 balls.
SET 1: Ohio State had a slight 12-11 edge to start the match. The Buckeyes were forced to call a timeout after the Terps tied the score three times before taking a 20-17 lead. Maryland went on to win the set, 25-22.
SET 2: Maryland burned a timeout early as OSU opened the frame on a 9-3 run. The Terps battled back to tie things up at 20-all and managed to overpower the Buckeyes for a 25-22 victory.
SET 3: The Scarlet & Gray sprinted out to an early 7-1 lead. Maryland called a timeout at the 15-8 mark but it did not help as Ohio State cruised to a 25-15 winner. The Buckeyes held UMD to a .037 clip (5-4-27) during the set.
SET 4: With the score locked at 6-all, a pair of attacking errors by the Terps and two blocks put OSU up 10-6. Although Maryland pulled within one late in the rally, the Buckeyes were able to hold on for a 25-22 triumph.
SET 5: Maryland got going quickly with a 5-1 advantage. Ohio State responded with a surge of its own to go ahead 10-8. The score ended up tied at 13-all and the teams traded the next four points until the Terps secured a 17-15 decision.
The Buckeyes continue spending time on the road when they visit Rutgers on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
