COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes began the regular season with a triple-header sweep, downing regional opponents Dayton, Butler and Xavier all by the score of 4-0 to begin their 2016 campaign.
The Buckeyes opened with a 4-0 victory against the Flyers, seeing Mikael Torpegaard and Hugo Di Feo defeat their doubles opponent 6-0. Both were victorious in their singles matches as well with Torpegaard defeating Jordan Benjamin 6-1, 6-3 and Di Feo besting Carsten Fisher 6-2, 6-2. Matt Mendez defeated Simon Jayaram 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the Buckeye victory.
The Buckeyes continued with a 4-0 defeat of Butler. Torpegaard and Di Feo again defeated their doubles opponent 6-0, while Martin Joyce excelled in singles play, defeating Spencer Lang 6-1, 6-0. Ralf Steinbach clinched the match by downing Adrian Mag 6-3, 6-0.
Ohio State defeated Xavier 4-0 in the final match of the night which was also the Buckeyes’ Pink Day match. Steinbach and Hunter Tubert defeated Jeremy Schneider and Jack Dykema 6-0 in doubles competition. Torpegaard did not drop a set on the day, defeating Jeremy Schneider 6-1, 6-2. Mendez clinched the victory for the Buckeyes with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Gabriel Chaves Aruajo.
Ohio State will look to carry their momentum into the ITA Kickoff Weekend this weekend when they play host to Wichita State at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. South Carolina and Denver will follow at 2 p.m. on Saturday with the winners meetings on Sunday. The Buckeyes also play Toledo at 5:30 p.m. in the Varsity Tennis Center Sunday evening.
