QUINCY, Ill. – Reese Devilbiss and Matt Tompkins struck from the pins and back row again and again Friday night at Quincy, combining for 31 kills on 45 attempts as the Ohio State University men’s volleyball team (10-6, 2-3 MIVA) raced past the host Hawks (4-12, 1-4 MIVA). Devillbiss’ 17 kills nearly matched the Quincy team total of 20 kills.
The Ohio State offense clicked at a .470 attacking rate, boosted by Austin Gerwig’s .600 hitting percentage (7-1-10) in support of the aforementioned outside hitter duo of Devilbiss and Tompkins. Freshman setter Michael Wright assisted on 46 of the 49 Buckeye kills. The Buckeyes registered at least 16 kills in all three sets.
Luke Meidel and Wright led the defensive charge, digging 11 and nine balls, respectively.
Sixty of 62 all-time meetings between these two combatants have now gone the way of the Buckeyes, including the last 16 straight.
Set 1: Tompkins returned from injury which had held him out since the opening weekend. He delivered a service snipe on the night’s first whistle and was off and running. Ohio State led from start to finish, fueled by Devilbiss and Tompkins’ dozen kills.
Set 2: Ohio State stretched the lead to as wide as seven tallies at 19-12 before the Hawks stormed back to provide a scare. With the edge chiseled down to a loan point at 24-23, Gerwig slammed the door shut with a kill for point #25.
Set 3: Devilbiss, Gerwig and Tompkins put away 13 of 16 swings. Tim Baldwin joined the fun, too, smacking three kills on six attempts. Ohio State seized the first three points and never looked back in a 25-16 match clincher.
MIVA play continues Saturday night when the Buckeyes visit Lindenwood University for an 8:30 p.m. ET match.
