Buckeyes are Undefeated after Day 1 of Elite Invitational Duals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes finished day one of the Elite Invitational Duals undefeated against all five opponents they faced. The team ended the day with a total of 185 victories with the women contributing 106 wins and the men earning 79.

The first round of the day started off with a victory by the women’s squad over Cornell. They defeated the Big Red 19-8, and the epee unit dominated the round with their 8-1 victory. Emma von Dadelszen, and Alexanne Verret went undefeated and Eva Petronchak suffered just one loss.

The men’s squad was successful in its first test of the day finishing 17-10 over Air Force. The women followed suit with their 20-7 victory. Epee again dominated the round with the men and women finishing 7-2 and 8-1 respectively. The men’s unit featured Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger, Oliver Shindler, and Lewis Weiss.

In the third round, the Buckeyes defeated Penn with identical scores to last year’s victory at this same event. The women completed the round with an 18-9 victory while the men stole a 15-12 win over the Quakers.

Another victory by the Buckeyes, this time featuring the first undefeated bout of the day for Ohio State. The women’s sabre unit, manned by Joanne Chen, Aleksandra Kolmykova, and Sarah Merza, helped the women to a 23-4 victory over NJIT.

The men’s squad finished the round 21-6 with each unit contributing a third of the squad’s points. Stas Sudilovsky, Domenik Koch, and Frederik Koch each went undefeated in their respective bouts.

Ohio State ended the day with a combined 52-2 victory over Cleveland State. Earning undefeated bouts were the men’s foil and epee units as well as women’s sabre and epee.

For the men, Stas Sudilovsky won eight of his nine bouts of the day and Frederik Koch and Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger each won seven of their eight bouts. Leading the way for the women, Emma von Dadelszen finished undefeated in 12 bouts. Sarah Merza, Alexanne Verret, and Gabriela Cecchini all fenced in more than 10 bouts and suffered just one loss each.

Competition continues Sunday morning at French Field House. The first round will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday’s competition will feature four teams that all finished in the top-25 at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
