Buckeyes Advance Two Boats to A/B Semifinals at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team advanced two of three boats to the A/B semifinals on the first day of  the 2023 NCAA Championships Friday morning in Pennsauken, N.J. The Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four will race Saturday morning for a spot in the grand final.

The Second Varsity Eight was the first Buckeye boat to advance to the A/B semifinals, finishing third in the first heat of the event. Yale took the early lead in the race and Ohio State and Brown battled for second the entire way. Ohio State ultimately took third, clocking a time of 6:43.20. The Buckeyes crossed the finish line just 2.99 seconds behind the Bulldogs and only .03 behind Brown.

Also advancing to Saturday’s A/B semifinals are Brown, California, Pennsylvania, Princeton, SMU, Texas, Virginia and Yale. Ohio State will race in the sixth lane of the first A/B semifinal scheduled for 9:24 a.m.

In the Buckeyes’ First Varsity Four race, it was Stanford who held the lead followed by Princeton. Ohio State was in fourth through the first 1500m behind Syracuse but made a push in the final 500m to secure the third-place finish and a punch its ticket to the A/B semifinal. The Buckeyes finished in a time of 7:36.34.

Brown, California, Duke, Michigan Princeton, SMU, Stanford, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Yale join Ohio State in the 1V4 A/B semifinals. The boat will race in the first heat of the semifinal in lane one at 10:12 on Saturday.

The First Varsity Eight was the first boat to race at the 2023 NCAA Championships for the Buckeyes, finishing fourth in its heat. The Buckeyes stopped the clock in 6:42.127, beating Gonzaga and Jacksonville.

The boat will race in the second C/D semifinal Saturday scheduled for 8:24 a.m. The Buckeyes will race against Jacksonville, Northeastern, Rutgers and George Washington in their semifinal heat.

Saturday’s competition begins at 8 a.m. The top three from each race on Saturday will advance to Sunday’s upper final and the remainder of teams will race in the lower finals.

The Buckeyes are one of 22 teams competing at the championships. Each school fields two eight boats and one four boat for the championship regatta.
