COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes traveled to No. 11 Penn State and came away with a loss, 23-12, before 3,842 at Rec Hall.
A day after falling to No. 3 Iowa, the Buckeyes (9-6, 0-2 Big Ten) gave Penn State a struggle in a meet that was much closer than the score indicated. Penn State opened up with a majority decision victory at 174 to take a 4-0 lead, but Nick Preston (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) scored his own majority decision victory, upsetting No. 12 Ross Thatcher, 13-5, to tie the score at 4-4.
After the Nittany Lions (7-2, 1-0 Big Ten) picked up a win at 197, PSU’s Rick Bolinsky and Ohio State’s Eric Wood (Sr. Ashland, Ohio) battled in the heavyweight class through regulation and overtime tied at 1-1. In the ride-out period, Bolinsky picked up a reversal from the down position to record the win to make the meet score 10-4.
Penn State extended their lead to 13-4 with a win at 125. OSU had another opportunity to slice into that deficit at 133 when OSU’s Robert Sessley (So., Columbus, Ohio) and Penn State’s No. 18 Nate Parker battled into overtime. Again, however, Penn State got the better of Ohio State in the extra stanza. This time, Parker scored one point for an escape to notch a 2-1 victory, which all but ended any hopes of a Buckeye upset.
Ohio State was able to win two of the remaining four matches. At 149, Jeff Bucher (Sr., Toledo, Ohio) picked up a majority decision over Jean Celestin, 12-4. In the meet’s final match, it was Peter Rogers (Jr., Sheboygan, Wis.) who continued his torrid pace. His victim this time was Kevin Vile, who was defeated 9-1. Rogers has now won nine straight decisions and eleven of his last twelve dating back to December 20 against Bucknell.
Ohio State’s next action comes Friday, January 29, when they take on the No. 16 Purdue Boilermakers at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
