COLUMBUS, Ohio Sammy Edwards, Nikki Walts and Morgan Wolcott, seniors on the Ohio State women’s soccer team, have been named Scholar All-Americans by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced Thursday. Walts and Wolcott earned first team Scholar All-America honors while Edwards was named a second team Scholar All-American.

Walts was named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and first team All-Big Ten in 2017, leading the team and ranking second in the conference with nine assists while starting all 21 matches. The team co-captain and third team All-American also earned second team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and finished her career fourth on the Ohio State career assists list with 22.

“It’s a great honor to be named a Scholar All-American,” Walts said. “This accomplishment would not have been possible without all of the academic and athletic support Ohio State has given me through services offered and the facilities. I am so grateful for my coaches and teammates who dedicated themselves to an outstanding season. Ohio State did not only set me up for success in athletics and academics, but it has helped me prepare for the future.”

Wolcott, a three-time team captain, helped the Buckeyes to a 0.59 goals-against average and 10 shutouts while starting 18 matches at center back. The Milford, Ohio, native and second team All-American scored two goals and added an assist while being named Big Ten Defender of the Year, first team All-Big Ten and second team CoSIDA Academic All-District.

“My time here as a student-athlete has been very rewarding,” Wolcott added. “The opportunities Ohio State has given me has helped shaped who I am. The amount of support I have received during my time here has helped keep me disciplined and stay on track both academically and in sport.”

Edwards was named a first team All-Big Ten selection and first team All-Midwest Region pick after leading the team with 10 goals and 25 points while starting all 21 matches. The Dublin, Ohio, native was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice this season and notched five game-winning goals. Edwards concluded her career 10th on the Buckeyes’ career goals and points list with 25 and 59, respectively.

“I’m really proud of this honor,” Edwards said. “It hasn’t been the easiest to balance soccer and academics so I am extremely proud of this accomplishment because it directly shows the hard work I put into being a student-athlete. It makes me feel very confident going into the next chapter of my life knowing I’m able to deal with the different challenges that come my way. Being a student-athlete at Ohio State has put me in a position to succeed in whatever I want to do with my future and I wouldn’t change my time or experiences here for anything.”

The Buckeyes concluded the 2017 campaign with a 15-5-1 record and the first outright Big Ten championship in program history.
