Buckeye Tennis Starts Season Ranked in the Top 10
Ohio State boasts three players ranked in the top-5 of the singles rankings

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Coming off a number of solid performances in the fall, the Ohio State men’s and women’s tennis teams will both start the spring portion of the season ranked in the top 10. The men’s team is ranked No. 3 and the women’s team is No. 7.

In addition to the team rankings, three Buckeyes are ranked in the top 5 of the singles rankings. Francesca Di Lorenzo is No. 1 on the women’s side while Mikael Torpegaard is No. 2 on the men’s side and Hugo Di Feo is No. 5.

Di Lorenzo won both the ITA All-American and ITA National Indoor titles in the fall. The sophomore from New Albany, Ohio, was ranked third in the fall after garnering All-America honors, along with the first No. 1 ranking and ITA national title in program history, as a freshman in 2015-16.

Torpegaard advanced to the quarterfinals at the season-opening ITA All-American Championship and then finished runner-up at the ITA National Indoor Championship. This was in addition to claiming his first ATP title at the Columbus Challenger in September. The Denmark native spent the final five weeks of the regular season last year and all fall of this season ranked No. 1.

Di Feo opened the year ranked No. 33 but quickly rose thanks to a runner-up finish at the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla. He advanced to the round of 16 at the indoor championships and finished the fall with a 6-2 singles record and a 4-3 doubles mark.

Herkko Pollanen had the best singles record in the fall for the men at 8-2. He moved through qualifying and into the round of 32 at the All-Americans and then advanced to the semifinals at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. He starts the spring ranked No. 33 and sophomore Martin Joyce will start at No. 53.

On the women’s side, junior Anna Sanford is ranked No. 41, senior Miho Kowase is No. 59 and junior Olivia Sneed is No. 88. In doubles, the tandem of Sanford and Kowase, who qualified for the NCAA tournament a season ago, hold down the No. 41 spot. For the men, Joyce and Di Feo jumped from No. 43 in the fall to No. 25 to open the spring while Torpegaard and Pollanen check in at No. 55.

The men’s team opens the season with a pair of double headers. The first is on Jan. 18 against Toledo and Cleveland State and the second is Jan. 24 against Butler and Xavier. Ohio State will then host men’s and women’s matches in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 27-29. The men start the weekend on Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. against Utah and then will play either Denver or Old Dominion match on Jan. 28. The women will start their spring season against Florida State at 10 a.m. on Jan. 28 and then play either Alabama or Harvard on Jan. 29. Admission is free, with all matches played inside the Ohio State Varsity Tennis Center (880 West Henderson Road).
