Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team finished sixth at the 2005 Big Ten Championships with 293 points, 43 points more and two places higher than last season. Throughout the meet, the Buckeyes recorded 14 United States National qualifying times, 17 NCAA `B’ times and 21 individual lifetime-best times. Nine different performances rank in the school’s all-time Top 5 list. Senior Mitch Richeson, of Greenwood, Ind. (Greenwood) was the team’s only Big Ten champion after he won the 1-meter springboard on Thursday.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Rob Kauscher (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) finished fourth for the Buckeyes with a time of 1:59.19. His preliminary time of 1:59.13 was the second fastest time in Ohio State history, an NCAA `B’ qualifying time, a U.S. National qualifying time and a lifetime-best. It was the second time during the meet Kauscher cracked into the Ohio State history books. He also recorded the second fastest Ohio State time in the 100-yard breaststroke Friday with a time of 54.16.

Nate King (So., Youngstown, Ohio/Warren Harding) was the highest-placing Buckeye in the 200-yard backstroke. Clocking in at 1:46.54, King was the 11th finisher. Daniel Novak (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Foothill Knight) and R.J. Lemyre (So., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) placed 16th and 18th, respectively, for the Buckeyes, with Lemyre’s time of 1:48.78 a lifetime-best time and a U.S. Nationals qualifying time. In preliminary races for the same event, King’s time of 1:45.81 was the second fastest time in school history, as well as an NCAA `B’ qualifying time, a lifetime best and a U.S. Nationals qualifying time. Novak also recorded a lifetime-best and a U.S. qualifying time during preliminary rounds with a time of 1:47.92. Tommy Seay (Sr., Buffalo, N.Y./McKinley) finished 10th with a time of 44:59 in the 100-yard freestyle. Seay earned an NCAA `B’ qualifying time, a lifetime-best time and a U.S. Nationals qualifying time. Joe Doyle (So., Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) finished 15th for the Buckeyes. During preliminaries, Doyle’s time of 44.87 was a lifetime-best time and a U.S. Nationals qualifying time. Matt Voelker (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) also recorded a lifetime-best of 45.25.

In the 1,650-yard freestyle, Ryan Sciortino (Sr., Maitland, Fla./Lake Highland) finished 24th for the Buckeyes, recording a season-best time of 15:56.48. Chris Stoneburg (Jr., Copley, Ohio/Copley) was 23rd in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.50.

Kellen Harkness (So., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) was the highest placing Buckeye diver in the platform event. Harkness scored a total of 376.05 points for a 17th-place finish.

The Buckeye relay team wrapped up the Big Ten action recording the fifth fastest time in Ohio State history in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Seay, Doyle, Gary Grant (So., Wood-Ridge, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Voelker finished with a time of 2:58.50, a season-best as well as an NCAA `B’ qualifying time.

Minnesota edged Indiana, 720-717 for the team championship. Indiana was followed by Michigan (482), Northwestern (432), Purdue (351) and Ohio State (293). The last time Ohio State finished as high was at the 2003 championships when it was sixth.

Buckeye divers next travel to West Lafayette, Ind., March 11-13 for the NCAA Zone Qualifying Regional. Select Buckeye swimmers will travel to Bloomington, Ind., March 5 for the Indiana Last Ditch in an attempt to improve or acquire NCAA qualifying times.
