COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State soon-to-be-sophomore Gulsah Gunenc finished her first-ever Olympic experience Wednesday at the Olympic Aquatic Centre, which is located at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in Maroussi, Greece. The native of Edirne, Turkey, competed in both the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events. Gunenc finished third in the first heat of the 100 fly Saturday turning in a time of 1:04.30, just more than two seconds slower than Kateryna Zubkova of the Ukraine, who won the heat in a time of 1:02.22. Gunenc’s time did not advance to the semifinal. Australia’s Petria Thomas went on to claim the gold medal Sunday turning in a time of 57.72. Gunenc returned to the pool Tuesday for the preliminary round of the 200 fly. She finished seventh in the eight-person first heat and swam 2:20.17, just more than seven seconds behind Russia’s Maria Bulakhova, who was the first to touch the wall in 2:12.99. Poland’s Otylia Jedrzejczak took home the gold medal Wednesday, finishing the race in 2:06.05.
