COLUMBUS, Ohio – Anna Sanford, a senior on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week after posting three wins on court one last weekend.
Sanford opened the weekend with a straight-set win over No. 23-ranked Kate Fahey of Michigan (6-3, 6-3) and also downed Michigan State’s Aslina Chua in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). In doubles, Sanford and Shiori Fukuda topped Fahey and Brienne Minor of Michigan, 7-5. The Buckeye tandem led 5-2 vs. the Spartans when the Buckeyes clinched the doubles point and doubles play was halted.
Sanford is 11-2 in dual matches in singles and has a 10-1 mark in doubles this spring, all on court one. This is her second career Big Ten honor; she was also recognized April 4, 2017.
The Westerville, Ohio, native moved into the singles rankings at No. 62 this week. She and Fukuda are ranked 25th in doubles.
The No. 30-ranked Buckeyes (9-5) hit the road for their next four matches. Ohio State takes on Minnesota at 5 p.m. ET Friday and Wisconsin at 1 p.m. ET Sunday, followed by matches at Indiana April 13 and Purdue April 15. The regular season ends with home matches vs. No. 11 Illinois April 20 and No. 13 Northwestern April 22.
