COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing programs both went 3-2 Sunday in the Philadelphia Invitational. The men posted wins over Yale (15-12), Columbia (19-8) and Princeton (15-12) and fell to NYU (13-14) and Penn (12-15). On the women’s side, Ohio State defeated NYU (25-2), Temple (17-10) and Penn (15-12) and dropped matches to Columbia (18-9) and Princeton (19-8).
The men are 15-6 on the year, with the women 15-7.
All three women’s squads were 3-2 on the day. For the men, foil was 4-1, with epee and sabre both 3-2.
For the second straight day Roscoe Swartz led the Buckeye men in wins, posting an 11-4 mark Sunday in sabre. Diego Cervantes was second in total wins for the men and led foil with nine victories. Bence Bende was first for epee with six victories, followed by Gabriel Feinberg and Henry Lange with five each. Justin Vogler and Nathan Wriedt tied for second on the men’s foil squad with six victories each. Stephen Chou was second on the sabre squad with eight wins on the day and Nolan Williams notched seven.
For the women, Julieta Toledo was a team-best 12-3 and led sabre and Camilla Rivano was 11-3 in foil. Montserrat Viveros and Karina Dyner were first for epee with seven wins each, followed by Lucy Whittemore and Eva Mazur with five. Miranda Freedman and Alina Lee ranked second on the foil squad with six victories each. In sabre, Ele Perrier and Evie Bustamante tied for second with six victories.
Ohio State will compete at the Northwestern Duals Feb. 5-6 and then travel back to Evanston, Ill., for the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference championships Feb. 26-27.
