Buckeye Hockey Notebook – Mercyhurst Week

The Ohio Sate men’s hockey team, after splitting a series with Omaha to open its home schedule, hits the road for a nonconference matchup with Mercyhurst this weekend.

The Buckeyes (2-1-1) and Lakers (2-2-0) will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Erie, Pa. The games will be streamed through FloHockey and live stats will be available. Gameday Links

Last weekend, the Buckeyes scored in the third period for a 3-2 victory over the Mavericks Friday. Saturday, Omaha tallied a third period gamewinner for a 2-1 win. Game One Wrapup | Game Two Wrapup

Following Saturday’s game, the Buckeyes hosted a meet and greet with season ticket holders.

Ohio State is 8-2-1 all-time vs. Mercyhurst, including a sweep in Columbus last December, with 3-1 and 5-4 Buckeye victories in Value City Arena.

The first and only meeting between the teams in Erie, Pa., was in January 2015, with a 6-3 Buckeye win and 2-2 OT tie.

Through the first two weeks of the regular season, the Buckeyes are 15th nationally on the power play, converting 6-of-25 (.240) chances.

The squad started the year with at least one power play goal in each of the first three games, including a 3-for-7 outing in game one vs. Omaha.

The Buckeyes broke a two-all tie in the third period vs. Omaha Friday, with Quinn Preston netting the gamewinner. In the Ice Breaker to open the season, Ohio State scored the GWG in the third period vs. RIT (Ronnie Hein) and the game-tying goal vs. Western Michigan in the third (Matt Miller). All three goals came on the power play.

Happy 100th

Buckeye senior defenseman Gordi Myer skated in career game 100 in the Scarlet and Gray Friday vs. Omaha. He has 31 points, with 28 assists, in 101 games as Buckeye.

Myer is the third current Buckeye to hit the 100 collegiate games mark, joining defenseman Wyatt Ege (114) and forward Tanner Laczynski (106). Matt Miller is nearing the century mark with 97 games played as a Buckeye.

In the Rankings

After splitting last weekend’s series, Ohio State moved from No. 12 to No. 15 in the USCHO poll.

Big Ten teams joining the Buckeyes include No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 12 Penn State and No. 20 Minnesota, with Michigan receiving votes.

The Buckeyes are also No. 15 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings.

Conference schools in the Top 15 are No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 9 Penn State, with Minnesota receiving votes.

Three Buckeyes had multiple point outings in the win Friday vs. Omaha.

With a goal and two assists, Tanner Laczynski had his eighth career three-point game and his 34th overall multiple-point outing. He has a 1-3-4 line this year and now has 113 points (38g, 75a) in the Scarlet and Gray, ranking second among active players in career points. His 1.07 points per game is best among the nation’s seniors and tied for second overall among non-rookies.

Senior Matt Miller, who leads the Buckeyes with five points (2g, 3a), had a goal and an assist in game one vs. the Mavericks. He has eighth multiple point outings, including two this season. Miller picked up career point 50 in the Ice Breaker Tournament and has a 16-36-52 line in 97 games as a Buckeye.

Sophomore Gustaf Westlund had his fifth career game with two-plus points as a Buckeye, posting two helpers against Omaha. Westlund has posted 22 points, with 17 assists, through 29 games in the Scarlet and Gray.

Game Time Announced

Get out the calendar! The game time for the Buckeyes’ matchup vs. Minnesota Dec. 6 has been set for 8 p.m. in Value City Arena. The teams will also meet at 8 p.m. Dec. 7 to close out the first half of the Buckeyes’ schedule.
