COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State fencers competed in the January North American Cup in Charlotte. Buckeyes past and present collected a total of seven Top-50 finishes overall.
Senior Team Men’s Epee
Matthew Comes, Kaiden Crotchett, John Culpepper and Henry Lange represented men’s epee in the senior team competition. As the top-seeded squad, the Buckeyes had a bye in round one then dominated through to the finals bout where they lost to Elite Team 1 43-42, earning second place overall.

Sarah Merza – Division I Women’s Sabre
Merza picked up three wins in pool bouts which allowed her to advance to elimination play. She battled to the round of 16 picking up three wins along the way, winning 15-8, 15-14 and 15-10. She dropped just short of the quarterfinals in a close bout 15-13 to Vera Kong of Laguna Fencing Club, who went on to place fifth overall. Merza recorded half a dozen wins and placed 15th of 148.

Henry Lange – Division I Men’s Epee
Lange started elimination bouts with a bye after a demanding performance in pool play, dropping only one of six bouts. He beat out his next three opponents 15-10, 15-5 and 12-11 to push him through to the round of 8 where he fell to Benjamin Bratton, who went on to earn gold.
