Official OSU athletics Facebook page heats up over summer months, adds 100,000+ followers since June 

COLUMBUS, Ohio – One need not look far to find proof that when Ohio State fans get together, they do so in big, big ways. Crowds, bowl travel parties, NCAA tournament games, tailgates and now Buckeye Nation has taken quite a liking to social media. Over the weekend, the official Ohio State University Department of Athletics fan page on moved past the 400,000-follower mark, adding 100,000-plus fans in less than an 8-week span since hitting 300,000 in early June.

Since its reintroduction as a Facebook “fan page” in November 2008, Ohio State athletics has continued to experience rapid growth in the social media circles. The The social-networking page, which went from 20,000 followers to 200,000 in less than a year (Nov. 2008-Oct. 2009), offers fans a connection to all that goes on within Ohio State athletics, including breaking news, photos, video, event promotions and more.

Some of the more popular summer posts have included fan feedback congratulating Chris Spielman’s recent induction into the College Football Hall of Fame and Ohio State faithful offering memories of football legend Jack Tatum, who passed away last week at age 61.

Fans also respond positively to posts highlighting many of the community outreach programs performed by Ohio State student-athletes, coaches and staff. Last week, Ohio State hosted a special sports camp for the families of the Central Ohio National Guard (read article).   

“Absolutely a fabulous idea,” Mike Ruggiero, an Ohio State Facebook fan, said in his comment on the post. “This is why I’m a BUCKEYE. Makes me proud to be a fan of an organization that is top notch.” 

The broad Buckeye reach touches all corners of the world as the social media site is followed in more than 20 countries and 20 languages.
