LAS VEGAS, Nev.- Two Ohio State Men’s Gymnastics Alums competed this past weekend at the Winter Cup Challenge, the qualifying event for the 2020 U.S. Gymnastics Championships as well as an attempt to qualify for the 2020 Olympic team trials. The competition began Thursday, Feb. 20th and concluded Saturday, Feb. 22nd.
Sean Melton, class of 2018 for the Buckeyes, competed and placed in the Top 3 in the rings event with a score of 28.350 overall after two trials (14.400, 13.950). As a Buckeye, Melton was a seven-time Big Ten Champion, ten-time All-American (3x all-around, 3x high bar, 2x rings, vault, parallel bars), the 2016 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, and the 2018 Nissan Emery award winner. In 2018, Melton took the title as the Winter Cup Still Rings Champion.
Alec Yoder, class of 2019, competed and took the title as the Winter Cup Pommel Horse Champion with a score of 30.000 overall after two trials (14.700, 15.300). As a Buckeye, Yoder was a two-time Big Ten Champion, eight-time All-American (3x all-around, 3x pommel horse, parallel bars, rings), and the 2019 NCAA Individual Champion on pommel horse.
