The Ohio State spirit squad dominated at Universal Dance and Cheer Association College Nationals this past weekend in Orlando, Florida. The Buckeyes, across all three teams, secured impressive finishes after competing at ESPN Wide World of Sports complex. Brutus Buckeye and the dance team each secured a national championship while the cheer team finished second.

Brutus Buckeye brought home the first gold of the weekend. To qualify for nationals, mascots must first submit an entry tape and receive subsequent rankings which account for 50 percent of the final scores. This entry taped earned Brutus the top spot entering the skit competition. On Friday, Brutus performed his skit which was written by members of the Brutus squad and coaching staff. This combination of points earned the nut the top place in the Division IA mascot competition, marking the second time Brutus has taken home the gold in the last five years.

The UDA dance team competition consists of three categories: pom, jazz, and hip-hop. Historically the team has competed in pom and jazz. The Buckeyes had two explosive semi-finals performances and elevated the energy on Sunday in finals. After coming off the program’s first national championships last season, the Buckeyes defended their title by winning the pom category and becoming national champions once again. Also receiving second in the jazz category by the small margin of .05 points, the team is excited to be bringing gold and silver back to Columbus.

The cheer team put an exclamation mark on a successful weekend with their second place finish in the competitive co-ed cheer category. Finishing behind the powerhouse University of Kentucky, Ohio State continues to make its presence known in the cheer world. This second place finish marks the team’s highest placement since 2001.

Also this weekend, junior cheerleader Maria Wisman secured a spot as a member of the 2019 US National Coed cheer team. Wisman went through a competitive tryout process to earn a spot on the team. This will be her second year representing USA Cheer.

These accolades make the Ohio State spirit squad the highest scoring squad of the competition.
