COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Buckeye pitcher Brad Goldberg advanced to the final of the World Baseball Classic Qualifier for Team Israel in Brooklyn, N.Y. Goldberg picked up the save in both wins over Great Britain Thursday and Brazil Friday at MCU Park – home of the New York Mets Class-A Brooklyn Cyclones.
Israel plays for the championship at 6 p.m. ET Sunday against the winner of Great Britain and Brazil for the final spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. The squad earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Brazil Sept. 23 after rallying to beat Great Britain, 5-2, in the opener the day before.
Goldberg is coming off a strong season of professional ball, posting a 3-5 record with a team-high 10 saves and a 2.84 ERA (50.2 IP) for the Charlotte Knights, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Goldberg represented the Charlotte Knights in the 2016 Sonic Automotive Triple-A Baseball All-Star Game as the team’s lone International League. He began the 2016 season with Double-A Birmingham and compiled a 1.50 ERA in four games before an April promotion to the Knights.
The 2013 third team All-Big Ten selection went 6-1 with a 2.99 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 81.1 innings pitched over 15 starts as a senior for the Buckeyes and was drafted in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox.
