Boulais Drops Match in NCAA Singles Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Isabelle Boulais, a freshman on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, lost her NCAA Singles Championship first round match Monday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year and ITA Midwest Region Rookie of the Year ends her season 16-14 overall in singles, with a 15-8 record in dual matches.

An at-large selection to the 64-player NCAA field, Boulais faced Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt, the No. 6 seed.

The first set was decided in a tiebreak, with the Commodore winning, 7-3. Boulais was up a break early, 3-1, and the players than exchanged holds for a 4-2 Buckeye advantage. Contreras won the next three games to go ahead, 5-4. Boulais won the next two games, holding for 5-all and breaking on the no-ad point for a 6-5 advantage. Contreras answered with a break of her own to force the tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Contreras led 2-1 and 3-2 early but won three points in a row for a 6-2 lead. Boulais won the next point but the Commodore closed it out.

In the second set, Contreras took command early, opening with a break and extending the score to 4-0. Boulais ended the run with a hold on a no-ad point, but the Commodore won the next two games for the match.
