COLUMBUS – Matt Borges, a senior defenseman on the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team, has been named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
Borges, from Garden City, N.Y., was key in Ohio State’s 17-10 win over Boston University last Saturday as he picked up five ground balls and caused two turnovers. He also led a defensive effort that kept Boston University off the scoreboard for 24:13 during the first half, in which time Ohio State scored six unanswered goals to build a 10-2 lead.
A captain for the 2019 Buckeyes, Borges has started 38 consecutive games and has 75 ground balls to go along with 24 caused turnovers in his 53-game career. His play has helped the Ohio State defense lead the Big Ten in goals-against average for two consecutive seasons.
Borges and the rest of the 13th-ranked Buckeyes (2-0) will face their first road test of the 2019 season when they travel to the University of Massachusetts on Saturday for a 1 p.m. face-off against the Minutemen at Garber Field. The game will be carried live on LaxSportsNetwork.com.
