Ohio State in seventh place after up-and-down opening day

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team opened action Friday at the Big Ten Championships, finishing the day with a team score of 585 (+17) after rounds of 293-292 on the par 71, 7,152 yard Windsong Farm Golf Club in Maple Plain, Minn. The Buckeyes sit in seventh place with two rounds remaining to decide the league title.

Ninth-ranked Illinois tops the standings by 12 strokes with a team score of 6-under 562. The Illini are lead by the efforts of Zack Barlow who closed out the day with a score of 6-under 136 to sit atop the individual standings.

Leading the charge for Ohio State was junior Bo Hoag, who carded consecutive rounds of 69 to post a 138 to tie for second. The Honorable Mention All-American posted three birdies to just one bogey in round one and headed into the second round with momentum on his side. He started with a birdie on No. 10 and a string of pars before running into some trouble. A pair of bogeys on holes 17 and 18 tripped him up a little, but the Upper Arlington, Ohio, product came back strong following the miscues to post three-straight birdies and return to under par.

The two rounds of 69 were Hoag’s fourth and fifth in the 60s this season. He has fired sub-70 scores in three of his last four tournament rounds.

Freshman Zack Sobel had a roller coaster-like opening round as he posted a 5-over 76 in a round that included a steady mix of birdies, bogeys, and pars. The native of Clearwater, Fla., came back in his second round with more consistent play, putting up several birdies and a string of pars to move him up the leaderboard into a tie for 20th. Sobel posted a score of 1-under 70 in the second round and will head into day two with a score of 146.

Behind Sobel was fellow rookie Matt Turner, who had a rocky opening day at the Big Tens. The Dubai native posted a 2-over 73 in the first round, but began the second round with four bogeys in five holes before finally breaking that rough patch with a birdie. He closed out the second round with a 76 and is tied for 33rd with a total of 149.

Brad Smith struggled through much of the day, firing rounds of 75-77 en route to 42nd place at 152. The junior from Peru, Ind., remained steady through the first round and seemed poised to make up some ground in the second stanza, but a pair of double bogeys halfway through slowed his momentum.

Rounding out the Ohio State lineup is senior Brad Wright, who posted rounds of 78-77. The Cambridge, Ohio, native is tied for 49th place at 155.

The Big Ten championships continue with a single round Saturday and Sunday. Teams begin teeing off for round three at 9 a.m. (CT) and live scoring for the tournament is available on
