COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The Ohio State baseball team (24-16 overall, 6-8 in the Big Ten) lost to the Indiana Hoosiers (25-19 overall, 7-11 in the Big Ten), 9-4, in game one of a doubleheader at Bill Davis Stadium. The loss evens the four-game series at one.%^$

%^$The Hoosiers jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Rich Berich hit a two-run home run off OSU starting pitcher Kevin Goodrum (Jr., Mentor, Ohio).%^$

%^$With the two outs in the bottom of the second inning, the Buckeyes added their first run of the ballgame. Nick Swisher (Fr., Parkersburg, W.Va.) dropped a bloop double down the leftfield line and advanced to third on a wild pitch by IU starting pitcher Zach McClellan. Two batters later, Trent McIlvain (Jr., Louisville, Ohio) drove in Swisher when he lined a sharp single that first baseman Vasilli Spanos could not handle to cut the IU lead, 2-1.%^$

%^$In the top of the third inning, Indiana added another run on a two-out double steal that allowed Benji Clause to score and increase the IU lead, 3-1.%^$

%^$In the top of the fourth inning, Chris Wilson led off with a double and scored two batters later on a single by Eric Farley. The run increased the IU lead, 4-1.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes began to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Swisher led off with a walk and moved to third on a bunt single by McIlvain that IU third baseman Dan Haegele threw wide of the first base bag. The error by Haegele was the first of the game. OSU then loaded the bases when Chris Alvord (Jr., Mentor, Ohio) coaxed a walk from McClellan. Jason Driscoll (Sr., Middlefield, Ohio) then sent a grounder to IU shortstop Eric Blakely to score Swisher and cut the IU lead to 4-2. Mike Check (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio) then followed with an infield single to score McIlvain and cut the deficit to 4-3.%^$

%^$In the top of the sixth inning, the Hoosiers added two more runs on two hits. Blakely and Clause hit back-to-back RBI singles to give IU a 6-3 edge.%^$

%^$In the top of the seventh inning, IU tacked on two more runs on a two-run home run by Blake St. Clair off OSU relief pitcher Kyle Brown (Fr., Washington Court House, Ohio) to increase the Hoosier lead to 8-3. Indiana added its final run on a sacrifice fly by Eric Farley.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes added their final run of the game on a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh by Swisher.%^$

%^$Goodrum (4-4) was the losing pitcher after going 5.2 innings and throwing 119 pitches. The lefty gave up eight hits, six runs, four earned runs, walked five and recorded seven strikeouts. McClellan was the winning pitcher and improves to 5-4 on the season.%^$

%^$The two teams will continue the second game of the doubleheader and game three of the four-game series at approximately 7 p.m.
