COLUMBUS, Ohio Justin Miller just in time! Ohio State’s senior captain has been selected as the Big Ten Conference’s Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after his efforts powered the Buckeyes to the 2009 Big Ten championship.
One week after hitting .667 and slugging at a 1.250 rate in Ohio State’s 2-1 series win at then-league leading Illinois Miller, from Dayton, Va., and Turner Ashby High School, hit .625 with a slugging average of 1.000 and an on-base percentage of .615 in four games last week. His week included 10 hits in 16 at-bats, five runs scored and six RBI. He raised his batting average 24 percentage points in the process to .314 overall and to .350 in the Big Ten Conference. He also extended his streak of multiple-hit games to six consecutive.
In Game 1 of the Iowa series, Miller went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored as Ohio State earned the 13-4 win. In Friday’s Game 2, he was 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a double as the Buckeyes edged the Hawkeyes, 5-4, to remain in contention for the conference championship. In the series finale on Sunday, needing a win to have a shot at the Big Ten crown, Miller was a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored on a double and his 10th home run of the year, propelling OSU to an 8-6 win.
Miller’s honor is the ninth time this season a Buckeye has earned a Big Ten weekly award, a single season Ohio State record for weekly conference awards. The 2004 team held the previous record with players honored by the Big Ten a total of seven times.
The weekly honor is the third of Miller’s career.
