Senior tri-captain was responsible for all three OSU goals last week, including eighth career game-winner

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Big Ten Conference has selected Ohio State senior forward Xavier Balc as its men’s soccer offensive player of the week, the league announced Monday. The Buckeyes earned a tie and a win on the road last week to capture the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Championship and Balc scored or assisted on all three OSU goals in those two games.

A native of Hudson, Ohio (Hudson High School), Balc scored Ohio State’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie at Louisville Wednesday, then scored early at 18th-ranked Michigan State Sunday for his eighth-career game-winning goal in the Buckeyes’ 2-0 win over the Spartans. Balc had the assist on Ohio State’s second goal in that game to build on his two school records for assists, which include 12 this season and 33 in his career.

Balc was a first-team All-Big Ten selection last year and has won weekly honors from the Big Ten three times now in his career.

Balc’s 12 assists this season lead the Big Ten and are tied for second-most in the nation. His four goals are tied for the team lead and give him 19 in his career.

With five points last week, Balc now has 71 career points at Ohio State, which ranks third in program history and is one point shy of third place.

Balc and the Buckeyes take an 11-3-4 overall record into the Big Ten Championship, which begins Thursday at Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich., when the second-seeded Buckeyes face No. 7 seed Michigan at 11:30 a.m. The winner of that match will play an 11 a.m. semifinal game Friday that will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
