COLUMBUS, Ohio – With 44 of its members volunteering at 5th Avenue Elementary, the men’s track and field team led the charge in March with 106 service hours. In total, 10 teams clocked service hours throughout the month en route to a sum of 245.
To date, Ohio State student-athletes have notched 4,750 service hours during the 2010-11 school year.
MARCH STANDOUT SERVICE
While many were watching basketball or preparing for upcoming finals, 61 Ohio State student-athletes and members of the Ohio State strength and conditioning staff took the time to host the inaugural 2011 Capital City District Boy Scout Winter Olympics, March 11-13, at the French Field House.
“We really wanted to bring the Ohio State experience to these kids and show the commitment Ohio State has to the community,” Anthony Glass, director of strength and conditioning for Olympic sports at Ohio State, said. “We felt this was something important to do for these kids and we hope to continue doing this year after year.”
More than 100 Boy Scouts from the Columbus inner-city program spent three days and two nights on campus and worked to earn personal fitness badges and pins. The troops arrived Friday and camped out through Sunday, while the Cub Scouts came for day-long activities Saturday.
Members of the men’s hockey, wrestling, track, football, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer and rowing teams educated the scouts Saturday in the areas of health, fitness and sports training through presentations and skill stations based on their sport. After learning proper techniques, both the Boy and Cub Scouts competed in a friendly competition at the end of the day.
Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee and Brutus Buckeye also made special appearances for the troops.
“Everyone from the university contributed to this event,” Glass said. “This opportunity is something most of these kids will remember for a long time.”
