COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State track and field programs will be represented at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field team trials by three champion performers: junior thrower Adelaide Aquilla and recently-graduated sprinters Anavia Battle and Tyler Johnson. The trials are taking place in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field. They start today and run through June 27.
In order to make Team USA, a top three finish in most events is required no matter what an athlete has already accomplished this season. NBC and NBC Sports will cover a large portion of the U.S. Olympic Trials competition. NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app will provide more in depth streaming coverage of select field events.
Aquilla, from Rocky River, Ohio, will be competing in the discus and the shot put. She won indoor and outdoor shot put titles at both the Big Ten and NCAA championship meets this season.
Battle, from Inkster, Mich., will be competing in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Battle was the Big Ten outdoor champion in both sprints this year and ran a leg on the Big Ten champion 4×100-meter relay.
Johnson, from Dayton, Ohio, will be competing in the 400 meters. He was the Big Ten champion both indoors and outdoors in the 400. He also won the 200 meters at the indoor Big Ten championships and helped the indoor 4×400 team win the Big Ten title.
All three were athletes of the championships at the most recent Big Ten outdoor championships and Aquilla and Battle were also named Big Ten athletes of the year.
All three are in action today (Friday, June 18). The schedule for the Buckeyes:
