Originally from Stow, Ohio, Scott (‘05) and Ben (‘09) Spurlock chose to compete for the Buckeyes during their collegiate careers and Ohio State is better off for it.
Scott was a 6-10 middle blocker with his best seasons scattered across the OSU record books. During his junior campaign, Scott was selected to the Second Team All-MIVA while finishing the season with a .410 attack percentage, good for 18th all-time. In a match against Lewis during the 2004 season, Scott recorded 13 assist blocks which ties him for the second best individual blocking performance in program history.
Younger brother Ben followed in Scott’s footsteps, joining the Buckeyes in 2005 as a middle blocker. He helped the squad to three MIVA regular season titles, as well as, three MIVA Tournament championships and NCAA Semifinal appearances in 2005, 2008, and 2009. He was named to the All-MIVA Second Team as a junior and holds the eighth best match hitting percentage in program history by attacking .900 in contests against Rutgers-Newark in 2009 and Carthage in 2006. Ben amassed 397 kills in Scarlet & Grey with a .438 career hitting percentage in his 69 career matches.
During their 2005 season, the only in which their careers overlapped, the Spurlocks helped propel the team to capturing the MIVA tournament championship, capping off the tournament with a win against Fort Wayne in Chicago.
WHERE THEY ARE NOW
Ben Spurlock (‘09) | In his own words After completing my degree and Volleyball Career for the Buckeyes in 2009, I couldn’t tear myself away from the game that gave me so much. I got a job coaching women’s college Volleyball at a small NCAA Division 2 school in Michigan in the fall of 2009, and spent 2 seasons there. In 2011, I had a great opportunity to move to St. Louis and become an Assistant coach at Saint Louis University. I coached there from 2011-2016. After the 2016 season, I had the chance of a lifetime to return home to Ohio and I am now an assistant for the women’s program at Ohio State.
I married the love of my life in 2011, Kim Willett (a former track athlete at OSU), and we have one amazing little girl, Maybel, who will be 3 this February. It is awesome being back in Columbus, close to family and especially my brother, Scott. Being able to grab dinner, or even get a quick lift in together in French Field House, is something I am thankful for every day.
