Buckeyes Win Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic



COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State picked up a pair of wins on Saturday in front of over 4,000 fans inside St. John Arena to claim the Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic title. The Buckeyes started the day with a sweep (25-14, 25-22, 25-11) of in-state rival Ohio (1-2) before storming past Texas A&M (2-1) in straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-20).

Ohio State was crowned champions of the tournament after going a perfect 3-0. The Aggies placed second, followed by Ohio and Albany in third and fourth place, respectively.

Lauren Witte was voted tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by Mia Grunze and Camry Halm. Witte racked up 48 points over the weekend, attacking .636 on 37 kills. She also held the Buckeyes down up front with 12 total blocks (1.20/set). Grunze did a little bit of everything behind 25 kills, 25 digs, five blocks and four service aces. Halm tallied 30 digs, seven assists and three aces.

Adria Powell hit .354 (24-7-48) with five rejections while classmate Vanja Bukilić averaged 2.70 kills per set. Dailey added 12.10 assists and 2.00 digs per set.

Ohio State proved to be tough at the net as it stuffed its opposition at a 2.20 blocks per set rate over three matches.

Witte led the Buckeyes against Ohio on 11of 13 error-free swings for a .864 clip. Bukilić was close behind with 10 kills, her second match in double figures. Powell and Grunze had six and five kills, respectively, while Olivia Dailey dished 36 assists. Hannah Gruensfelder and Bia Franklin scooped eight digs each. The Scarlety & Gray outscored the Bobcats by 20 points overall.

Ohio State recorded a .443 attacking efficiency versus Texas A&M. Grunze led the charge with a career-high 13 kills and three aces. Powell had a career night as well with 10 kills, a .562 hitting percentage and four blocks (three solo). Witte got in on five rejections and Dailey handed out 35 helpers.


Buckeye Nation had St. John Arena rocking on Saturday night, especially the student section. A total of 1,022 Ohio State students showed up to support the women’s volleyball team, the largest student crowd in program history.


The Buckeyes take their first road trip of 2018 when they visit Ole Miss Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
