COLUMBUS, Ohio – Twenty-four former and current Ohio State athletes received their bachelors degrees at winter commencement held in St. John Arena Friday, Dec. 13. Among the group of graduates is two-time Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year and Big Ten Athlete of the Year Donica Merriman (1998-2001) and former All-Big Ten punter Brent Bartholomew (1995-1998).
Merriman, who earned a B.A. in criminology, became the first OSU female track and field athlete to capture a national championship in an indoor and outdoor event in the same year as well as the program’s first outdoor champion. Merriman currently holds four Ohio State career records including both the indoor and outdoor 200-meter dash marks and is also listed in the career annals in the 60-meter indoor hurdles and outdoor 100-meter high hurdles.
Bartholomew, who was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 1999 NFL Draft, received his degree in agriculture and construction management. During his playing career, Bartholomew led the Big Ten in punting with a 45.2 yard average. Bartholomew also was named second team All-Big Ten his senior season and currently holds OSU career records for most punts (237) and most punting yards (9,927).
Former Ohio State men’s tennis stand out Chris Porter also is among the graduating class. He received his B.A. in anthropology. Porter was recognized as an All-Big Ten performer for both his junior and senior seasons. Porter is only the fourth Buckeye player to record 100 career wins and only the 11th OSU player all-time to earn All-Big Ten honors twice in a career.
The group also includes two current OSU football players, kicker Jeremy Uhlenhake and offensive guard Scott Kuhnhein, who will be participating in the Fiesta Bowl Jan. 3 when the Buckeyes take on Miami in the national championship game in Tempe, Ariz. Uhlenhake received his degree in family resource management, while Kuhnhein was the recipient of an economics degree from the Ohio State College of Business.
