COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three freshmen on the Ohio State fencing team – Maximus DeBack, James Flanagan and Stephen Chou – competed in the 2020 Junior Olympics held in Columbus over the weekend. All three advanced to elimination rounds and placed in the Top 100.
DeBack’s impressive 10-1 performance earned him a 10th-place finish out of 346 fencers in Junior Men’s Foil. In the same division, Flanagan went 6-1 and finished 66th. In Junior Men’s Sabre, Chou picked up six wins and dropped two bouts placing him 80th of 291.
The Buckeyes will begin postseason competition hosting the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in French Field House in Columbus Saturday and Sunday. Ohio State has claimed the last six conference titles.
