HONOLULU, Hawaii – The No. 14 Ohio State men’s volleyball squad (3-2) wrapped up its road trip out west suffering a 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-22) defeat to No. 8 UC Irvine (2-1). The Buckeyes next come back to campus to start a run of seven straight home matches beginning on Friday, Jan. 16, vs. Limestone College.
True freshman Nicolas Szerszen put away 11 kills on the night, attacking .333 (11-4-21). Shawn Herron was an efficient offensive weapon as well, bouncing six kills on nine swings with just one error (.556). Michael Henchy dug a team-high 10 balls to lead the way defensively.
Ohio State was on top for most of the opening set, leading by as many as five points at 20-15. That’s when the Anteaters turned the tables, however, ripping off eight of the next of 11 points to even the score at 23-all. UC Irvine then completed the comeback and notched a 26-24 triumph.
The Buckeyes owned an edge for much of set number two as well before UC Irvine battled back once again. Ohio State fell behind for the first time at 14-13 and never regained the advantage as the Anteaters took it 25-21.
Both teams posted identical attacking lines of 13 kills on 28 attempts with four errors in the third frame. Neither side could grab a substantial edge with a total of 14 tied tallies, including a 20-20 stalemate. A Buckeye service error then tilted the ledger in favor of UC Irvine for good and the Anteaters closed the door at 25-22.
